Back in February, my dear friend Fred Lakin gave me a delightful “job warming gift” to celebrate my new post at The Grove: he registered the domain digitalfacilitation.net in my name. Wasn’t that sweet? Then I was so busy settling in that I didn’t get it set up… until this week.

Since I’m barely managing to keep one blog alive, I didn’t think it would be wise to try to manage two. Instead, I created a Posterous account to collect bits and pieces about using digital tools in visual practice. Then I pointed digitalfacilitation.net to my Posterous page.

You did what now?
Posterous is a neat little tool that makes it really easy to collect information from different places and gather it all together. Images, short posts, long posts, videos, things I make, things other people made that I like — I can fling all of it at Posterous, in lots of different ways, and it all gets posted. It’s sort of like a patchwork blog.

I can write an email and send it to a certain address at Posterous, and it becomes a post on my page because it came from my email address. I can upload images and other media from my Posterous dashboard. I can post from my phone, from Twitter, or by clicking a button in my web browser to create a post that links to the page I’m looking at. It just doesn’t get any easier than that!

And this is related to your new domain how?
My new domain was empty except for a placeholder page that Fred put there for me. Rather than set up a new blog or website, ’cause who has that kind of time, I went into the settings on my hosting service and pointed the domain at my Posterous page. (Actually, first I tried to do this from the Posterous side, but since I didn’t really have a clue what I was doing it went into a kind of infinite loop where they were forwarding to each other forever. Bummer.)

Now when you go to digitalfacilitation.net, it really loads ninmah.posterous.com, although it looks like you’re on digitalfacilitation.net. But if you check the permalink for any post, you’ll see it’s really Posterous.

What’ll be on digitalfacilitation.net?
I’m planning to collect stuff related to digital visual facilitation over there, and keep posting actual blog posts over here. We’ll see how that goes. Meanwhile, thanks, Fred!

The inimitable Fred Lakin has proposed a panel for SXSW 2011 on “live visual blogging,” which is pretty much what it sounds like: live blogging, but with pictures. I’m one of the panelists, along with really amazing folks like David Sibbet (@davidsibbet), Sunni Brown (@sunnibrown), Dave Gray (@davegray), and of course Fred (@fredlakin, who needs to tweet more). If the panel is accepted, each of us will not only describe but demonstrate our favorite method of live visual blogging. Yup, I’ll be up there with my iPad, doing my thing, right there at SXSW!

…IF the panel is selected. As you know if you are a SXSW veteran, the community has a 30% say in the selection of panels. All you have to do to vote is create an account on SXSW’s PanelPicker, which right there gets you some solid geek cred, and then you can vote for mine or any other panel that you like, whether or not you’re able to go to the conference. (If you can’t go, pick the ones you want to read about afterward, ’cause they will be all over the blogosphere.)

Oh oh oh AND there’s this neat little tool that links your Twitter account to your panel choices. Check it out! It’s called FriendsPanels, and it lets you tag panels you’re on as well as panels you like. It doesn’t automatically “like” panels you vote on (yay), so your votes are still cast in confidence, but you can specifically “like” a panel if you want to call attention to it. Nifty!

Um, what are you still doing here? Go vote for my panel! (Please.)

I set up a… feed? page? space? on bloglines today. I have no clue what I'm doing. Several blogs offered a selection of feeds that I could subscribe to, and I picked more or less at random. I subscribed to a bunch of blogs that I read, and paged through them, trying to get used to the bloglines UI. I like that I can go to one page to see updates to blogs I follow (yeah, I know you've all been doing this for months and I'm wayyy behind you. I'm getting there.) Now I need a space to organize all my online organizational spaces!

The thing about free advice is that a lot of it is given that ought to be followed, but isn’t. Take, for example, the free advice I was given just yesterday, on an airplane, by Brian Lamb. I even asked for this particular bit of advice, by the way, and even had to pester Brian a little bit to get it, since by nature I think he prefers not to tell people what to do. I asked about blogs.

Specifically, I asked about a good way to get started with blogging. Brian gave me some excellent advice, which he says was given to him: Spend a couple of weeks reading blogs, and maybe commenting here and there, and then when you are comfortable, you can start your own. Don’t rush it.

I have to admit, this is good advice. Yet I am at this very moment ignoring it completely.

Brian gave me another tip, which I will follow: Don’t feel like you have to have a full-blown blog on your first day. I’m easing into it. So, hello world (at least I don’t have to say 10 PRINT “hello world” ; to make this work). Let’s just see where we go.
